In October 2006 new legislation came into force in England and Wales that replaced all previous fire safety legislation. TheRegulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 known simply as the Fire Safety Order is "self regulatory" and means that the responsibility for fire safety in the workplace now rests with employers and employees of a business.
Failure to meet the requirements of the Fire Safety Order allows the Fire Authorities to issue formal notices to prevent ALL or PART of your business premises from being used! Other penalties are a £5,000 fine and up to 2 years in jail!
This means that if you are an employer or are the responsible person you have to ensure that a fire risk assessment, regardless of the size of your workplace,is carried out. The Fire risk assessment must be completed by or with the assistance of a competent person.
